Major efforts have been taken in producing high performing disease resistant strains of Chicken, Japanese quail, Turkeys and Guinea fowl. Developed ten new strains at this Institute namely Nandanam Chicken I, Nandanam Chicken II, Nandanam Chicken III, Nandanam chicken IV, Nandanam quail I, Nandanam quail II, Nandanam quail III, and Nandanam Turkey I, Nandanam Turkey II, Nandanam Guinea fowl I. Package of practices for turkey farming standardized.

Strains developed

Nandanam Chicken I

  • Dual purpose coloured variety with good disease resistance
  • Most popular among rural poultry farmers due to its adaptability to backyard farming
  • Red plumage, brown shelled eggs and high fertility are sailent features
  • Hen housed egg production of 180 eggs per annum; fertility of 9.1% and attains one Kg body weight at 12 weeks of age.
  • Widely distributed to upgrade local /desi fowl as it is best suited for backyard rearing

Nandanam Chicken II

  • Pure bred multi coloured broiler variety
  • Good disease resistance, adaptability to substandard managemental conditions and massive appearance of adult are special features
  • Body weight of 1.44 kg at 8th week with feed efficiency of 2.66 and livability of 97%
  • More preferred by urban and semi-urban consumers owing to the desirable flavour of meat
  • Most popular among semi-unban farmers as backyard bird due to attractive plumage

Nandanam Chicken IV

  • This is a coloured dual purpose chicken developed through sustained selection and breeding for five generations.
  • Multi coloured feather pattern and most popular among farmers as backyard bird due to attractive plumage
  • Brown shelled egg producer
  • Flightiness to evade predation
  • Optimum egg number of 225 eggs per annum
  • Good survivability of 92.43% under the backyard system

Nandanam Quail (1988)

  • First strain of meat type Japanese quail released in South India
  • Dual purpose variety with an average 6th week body weight of 137.6 g. feed conversion efficiency of 3.83 and livability of 88%

Nandanam Quail II (1993)

  • Improved strain of meat type Japanese quail
  • Heavier body weight of 180 g at 6th week of age with feed efficiency of 2.76 and livability of 88.20%
  • Popularly referred as "desi quail"
  • Very popular among farmers, entrepreneurs and unemployed youth as basic stock for promising enterprise

Nandanam Quail III (2004)

  • Much improved high yielding meat type quail
  • More popular for heavy weight of 200 g and 247 g for male and female respectively at 6th week of age with feed efficiency of 2.70 and livability of 95%
  • This variety was developed by eighteen generations of selective breeding for body weight, feed efficiency, hatchability and livability.

Nandanam Turkey I

  • It is strain developed by cross breeding black desi variety with exotic Beltsville Small White turkey
  • Attractive black and white plumages with better disease resistance
  • An increment of 1680 g in adult body weight compared to desi bird at 16 week of age
  • High egg production with better hatchability compared to either parent variety
  • Good meat characteristics with desirable flavour
  • Best suited for backyard rearing and also preferred by entrepreneurs

Nandanam Turkey-II

  • It is an improved variety of Beltsville Small White turkey
  • Increased market weight of 3020 g in adult body weight compared to desi bird at 16 week of age
  • High carcass yield (75.36%)
  • Excellent livability (95%)
  • Egg Production (24 - 44 weeks)- 70 eggs
  • Well adapted to local agroclimatic conditions of TamilNadu
  • Adapts well to backyard farming conditions

Nandanam Guinea Fowl - I

  • It is an improved meat type pearl Guinea fowl variety
  • Improved 12th week (market age) body weight of 950-1000g
  • Improved livability of 95%

  • More suitable for backyard rearing under agro climatic conditions of Tamil Nadu
